Sumathi V. Suryaa Subrahmaniyam Bhadriraaj

A distinguished Bharatanatyam artist, teacher, and choreographer, Sumathi V. Suryaa Subrahmaniyam Bhadriraaj is trained in the prestigious Kalakshetra tradition of Bharatanatyam. Her artistic journey began in Chennai, culminating in her Arangetram, and has since taken her to some of India’s renowned cultural and academic institutions, including The Music Academy, Madras; India International Centre; FICCI; SPIC MACAY; and IIT Delhi. She has had the honor of presenting her art before distinguished audiences, including former Presidents and Prime Ministers of India.

A recipient of several honors and the title Bharatanatya Nanmani, Sumathi brings over three decades of experience in performing, teaching, and choreographing Bharatanatyam.

Through the years, she has had the privilege of nurturing students of all ages in India and abroad, guiding them not only in the technique and discipline of Bharatanatyam, but also in its rich artistic, cultural, and spiritual traditions. Her choreographic works thoughtfully bring together classical aesthetics, storytelling, music, and meaningful themes to create engaging experiences for diverse audiences.

Now based in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, Sumathi continues to share the beauty and depth of Bharatanatyam through performances, cultural programs, and educational initiatives across South Texas. Her students have been invited to perform at distinguished community and cultural events, including programs hosted by the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV).

Her teaching philosophy is thoughtful, nurturing, and adaptable, recognizing that every student has a unique learning journey and individual goals. Whether one seeks to explore Bharatanatyam as an art form, deepen their connection with Indian culture, or pursue a more intensive classical training, Sumathi warmly welcomes everyone with a passion to learn.
